LAG METER PROBLEM

Everytime I log onto invision my lag meter flys off to the far right and nothing will respond. If I type in a command it will maybe respond five minutes later. I have p4 and 512ram...Everytime I try to connect to EFnet it'll let me connect, but I can't join a channel and when I look at the top I see the lag meter is all the way over to the right. Can someone please help?
