Troubleshooting

Postby Riamus » Thu Mar 10, 2005 10:10 am

The best I can offer, then, is to troubleshoot this with you, which will take you through a lot of different things to find the problem. If you decide you don't want to go through all the things, just let me know. Otherwise, I'll try to keep working with you until we get this figured out.

A couple more things I need to know to help with figuring this out...

1) How are you doing the xdcc send command? Are you typing it as /msg <nick> xdcc send #? or are you opening a query window (private message window) and just typing xdcc send #??

2) When this happens with fservs, is it when you type the trigger, or when you use the GET command on the fserv itself?

First things to try out...

1) Type /remote off (or /remotes off... I forget if there is an "s" and I'm not at home right now to look) and try.

2) Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and list out everything you see on the processes tab for me. To save time, you may want to just take screenshots of the processes tab. If you're writing them out, I just need the process (image) name... not the rest of the information listed.

3) Get Ad-Aware and Hijackthis from the web (use google to find them). Run those and paste in the results here (don't fix anything unless you really know what you're doing... some things shouldn't be fixed that those find). Those aren't really IRC issues, but may be associated for some reason, so it's worth trying. If nothing else, it might get rid of other unwanted stuff that Norton will not find. I'd also say to get Spybot Search & Destroy, but that is no longer free. There may be a demo version or something out there if you want to look. Just let me know which program the info is from when you paste this info or screenshot it.

4) When you freeze, do you get any message from the server stating trying to send the file on *** port? Do you get any messages in the status window at all?

5) When you freeze, press Ctrl-Break and see if it stops the freeze and keeps you connected. If it does, let me know if the file starts or not.

We'll continue from there after you paste the results from these.

Thanks for taking the time to handle this with me.

1. It happens both, if I do the /msg way or if I query the bot and ask directly. I can't escape the freeze :(.

2. It only happens in the fservs if I use the get command. Browsing has no issues really, beside not being able to get into some, and that usually is normal.

======================================

1. Tried the remotes command. Got the following information, but no change in the outcome of sends.
[2:59pm] ERROR > 421: Unknown command: REMOTES
————————————————————
* Remote is off
————————————————————
LAGTIME.495435 Unknown command
————————————————————

2.

3. Did that done that. I have like 3 different spyware and trojan scanners and scan on a daily basis...

4. Sometimes I get the sending msg, others I don't. I have come to the conclusion that this is based off the speed reply of the bot and wether it is busy or not. Usually that is the case.

5. Makes not difference. Ctrl+Break is Ctrl+C correct or am I just stupid. LOL

Ok

Postby Riamus » Thu Mar 10, 2005 2:00 pm

Ok, I will look at those processes tonight and see what I come up with... if anything.

As for Ctrl-Break, it's not Ctrl-C in mIRC. You actually have to use Ctrl-Break (Break is the Pause key).

Oh i see, well tried that and still no go, once again, I appreciate the assistance on this, this has been really bothersome to me lately. What bothers me the most is that this has never happened before and also that it happened right after I come back from Spring Break...

Adware

Postby Riamus » Fri Mar 11, 2005 7:12 am

Well, there is only one process which is bad. That backweb process is adware with a level 2 security risk and should be removed. It's also something that uses the internet, so it is possible it could have some sort of affect on mIRC. It probably isn't the culprit, but it should still be removed.

Well, I took care of that, but I doubt that was the problem as I have seen it before even when mIRC was working. Anymore information would be great guys. Thanks for your time.

Try...

Postby Riamus » Sat Mar 12, 2005 10:02 am

Ok, try these things...

1) Disable and shut off all firewall/antivirus programs including *all* Norton software and check the XP firewall to make sure it is off. Then try. It could be possible that you're getting an issue from one of those. You can turn them back on afterwards, but make sure you completely close them.

2) Check to see if any new M$ Updates have been downloaded and installed. If so, you may want to try removing any new ones from add/remove menu. It's possible also that one of those could be the problem.

Those were some good ideas, but two I already explored. Annoying part about this, was I thought maybe the updates were the problem with this and the firewall. I had disabled them and still froze. Then when I uninstalled the updates (which sucked cause I had to restart after like everyone), then it still didn't work. I am just so annoyed, I can't download anything with mIRC :-(.

Hmm...

I'm out of ideas... not really sure what else could be the problem.

Yup, so I am I, I have done everything I could possibly do to my computer except reformat and trust me, I am in no way considering that option whatsoever. I don't know, I will just have to wait till I get my new computer or something, it's just odd that it would stop working all of sudden. Thanks for all your help.

Another option

Postby Riamus » Wed Mar 16, 2005 7:39 am

One other option is to use System Restore to take you back to before when it worked fine and see if that helps.

Just did it, didn't do a damn thing. I think I am destined for the rest of my time here at college to live without irc for now and wait until the end of april when I get home for the summer. Thanks for all your help.
