There is probably a better way to do this, but you can always run halflife from within mirc (/run path\halflife.exe or whatever the exe name is). You can then us a "on 1:input:" line that will set you away silently. You could then use the same input line to set you silently back when you type a line (it won't set you back when you quit the game until you type something).
If you want to do something like this, I can write a short script for you to do it. But, as I said, there is probably a better way to do it. If you want me to do the script, please post the path/filename of halflife.
