explorer crashing

Postby lololol » Thu Jan 06, 2005 4:01 pm

ok have u ever downloaded something, with a LONG ASS file name, and when you right click it, and it freezez up on RENAME or some !#@!, cuz it show the ENTIRE file name, it overflows, into a redundancy, and causes explorer to crash, simply put, the file name is too big and wigs out explorer, u can look up more at the onilon(futuremark) on this issue, NOW<

using invision, i've found that using large directories with many subdirectories cause the EXACT same issue, now, i have been quilty of doing this, but it also makes it confusing for the client potentially accessing your fserv, having to go through SO many dir'z and cd'z and what not... essentially, HAVING a long directory with many subdirectories will cause the EXACT same error in explorer, considering the fact you are indeed using explorer whilst pointing through directories...

good enough?

explorer

Postby AsX|JaCkaL » Fri Jan 07, 2005 3:17 pm

none of my files are longer than usual

I have test your theory, it is true that now, more than 20 folders will not display or more than 20 file in a folder will also crash.

I have split the folders in to multiple triggers, but that did not help at all,

I had exactly the same folders before and was able to brows them with ease

could it be that some windows setting are preventing long queries of the directory?

Well...

It's hard to say. Long ago, there was a problem with large directory listing causing problems, but I've not heard of it recently... and one of my folders has hundreds of files in it and can be viewed (tho why people bother, is beyond me since the entire contents are compressed in a small few MB file outside that folder.

If nothing else, you should have the folders split anyhow. Makes it much easier on people browsing files if they don't have to look through more than 40-50 files in any one directory. Timeouts on fservs make looking at more too difficult. Just take whatever folder(s) are not working and split them into something like A-M and N-Z or whatever. Easier on people browsing and probably won't give you as much trouble.

As for if it could be a Windows setting... it's possible. However, I have no idea what it would be and since I've not heard of this in probably a couple years, it probably isn't... Windows settings being messed up tend to happen to 1 in 5 people. No one ever seems to know how to use their computer. ;p

new

Postby AsX|JaCkaL » Fri Jan 07, 2005 6:14 pm

like the original post states; upgraded my pc and installed a new drive
a fresh copy of windows XP pro SP2 was installed

note: there was nothing wrong with the fserv before and I could browse the exact same folders with no problems
no splitting required, no directory structure was changed!

-----------
it is not only the problem of directory listing but file listing as well, over ~20 or so, it does the same freeze
at most there are 30-50 stand alone files in some directories

Well, obviously SOMETHING changed. :D

If none of that helps you, then who knows. Something has changed and you'll have to troubleshoot what changes have been made since you could browse them. Perhaps a file or two were added to those folders and made them too long... or a program was isntalled that is causing a conflict or something... no idea.

Update, Read Full report

Postby AsX|JaCkaL » Sun Jan 16, 2005 12:54 pm

After some more testing the results are confusing

when browsing my trigger using the invision explorer the commands are passed using 'dir' for listing and command 'ls' manually typed in the explorer triggers the 'dir' command so that in some directories with over 20 files the explorer freezes

now turning off the invision explorer( 'F6' ) invokes the default dcc chat where commands are similar; entering the directory by command 'cd' and listing them by 'dir' will have the same affect as the invision explorer presented(hangs)
BUT using the command 'ls' in the dcc chat browser will list files and directories fine with out a hitch, especially those that have presented problems in the invision explorer

I don't know what to make of this, but have a suspicion that the invision explorer might need to be altered to invoke the right commands.
any one know how to configure the invision explorer or if there are limitations settings any where?

any suggestions?

LS vs DIR

Postby Riamus » Sun Jan 16, 2005 1:27 pm

First, you need to understand the difference between the two commands.

DIR lists files in a vertical format
LS lists files in a horizontal format

Because you're trying to view files in a vertical form in the browser, LS will not work. That is why DIR is always used.

As for why it isn't working with DIR, I'd have to examine it myself. If you come into the Invision channel listed below, I can see what I can figure out.
